Four Seasons Animal Hospital offers medical and surgical services for a variety of exotic species including rabbits, rodents, birds and reptiles. Our doctors pursue continuing education opportunities in order to remain current in the latest advances and supplement their knowledge by consulting with national avian and exotic specialists. These pets are important family members and our doctors strive to treat them with this level of care in mind.
Preventive care is the key to healthy pets and this is particularly true for exotic species. Our doctors provide a comprehensive preventive health program, including annual wellness exams, teeth trimming for rabbits and rodents, beak/nail/wing trimming for birds, nutritional consultation, habitat/environmental management and behavioral enrichment.
In addition to preventive care, our doctors provide extensive medical, surgical and emergency treatment for these animals. A personalized and individual approach is provided in order to develop a diagnostic and treatment plan that includes any necessary laboratory testing and diagnostic imaging, as well as alternative modalities such as chiropractic and acupuncture.
It is common for most avian and exotic species to mask symptoms of illness. This can make it difficult for some exotic pet owners to determine when to seek veterinary care. In addition to basic symptoms that indicate an emergency in any animal, such as bleeding, trauma, open wounds, difficulty breathing, or seizures, the following symptoms in exotic animals warrant immediate attention:
Birds: egg-bound, fluffed feathers, decreased activity, sitting on the bottom of the cage
Rabbits and Rodents: not eating or not defecating for 24 hours, grinding teeth, diarrhea
Reptiles: skin burns, rectal prolapse, change in color or activity level, abnormal shedding |
