Digital Radiology
Just as a photograph uses light to create a picture of the outside of the body, a radiograph uses x-rays to create a picture of the inside of the body. High energy x-rays are transmitted through body tissues at different levels. They pass through the air in the lungs very easily, through muscle and internal organs less easily, and through dense structures such as bone at a much lower level. This difference in transmission is used to produce the familiar black, white, and grey images that are essential for diagnosis of fractures, tumors, fluid accumulation, organ enlargement, foreign objects and other abnormalities.

Historically, radiographs were produced by capturing x-rays on photographic film that required chemical processing to produce visible images. Modern x-ray machines create digital images using charge capture devices and computers. This advanced technology requires less radiation, provides images in seconds, and is safer for both the patient and the x-ray technician.

The majority of the radiographic studies performed at our hospital do not require sedation or anesthesia and can be performed on an outpatient basis.

The advanced Eklin Digital Radiographic System at Four Seasons Animal Hospital is state-of-the-art in veterinary medicine. The speed with which images can be obtained enhances safety and comfort for every patient and is critical in an emergency setting when time is of the essence.
